Soul Parenting is a feminist work that highlights the social disadvantages
placed on women through parenting roles. Using found text and objects such as verbatim statements, children’s clothing and shoes, I have employed an autobiographical lens to examine narratives of the family unit in western cultures. In this work, embroidery is employed as a process that both highlights the dismissive nature of certain comments, while reasserting the quiet strength of the enduring mother figure. Soul Parenting transforms materials and processes into visual clues that invite the viewer to read the work from a subjective perspective, allowing individual experience to morph into a collective one.
