This collection of prints consists of the body pressed in soot, conveying my own skin and clothing as recorded artefacts. Soot as a material was chosen for its particle density as well as its ability to reveal the finest details. Drawing on Peirce’s theory of indexicality, Soot employs the body as a tool to explore how physical impressions can evoke the presence and absence of a subject. Soot extends on the lineage of material practice and performance art to continue examining ideas of representation and the body in visual art.
