Kukala Sam za Pokojne explores traditional Serbian songs of loss, grief and mourning of the dead. In this work, the subject matter is found pacing in a field, expressing grief through the voice where song is exaggerated and extended to an unsettling and intense tone. Through the act of howling the
notes, the figure attempts to spiritually reconnect with the dead, seeking an indication of reassurance. The emotional expression portrayed in the work poetically responds to the artist’s exploration of her Serbian heritage and re-establishes a connection with entities of cultural and historical significance.
