Sara Nazemi

As a woman from Iran with a passion for filmmaking, I did not have the opportunity to pursue this interest at home due to the prohibition of women participation in public as a result of the 1978 revolution.

My artworks explore the intricacies of women’s identity amidst this radical and changing cultural landscape in Iran. Specifically, I have been exploring the Hijab as one of the most significant signs of cultural change in Iran since the revolution, which all women are required to wear in public.

In my final year’s works, I explore shooting in black and white because I think the extreme contrast of light and dark goes to straight to the heart and give an intense beauty to nature, landscapes and the humans within.
